Ron, Phil, David ,Craig-- Igot into this project about 2 yrs ago, wanting to know a little more about the electronic systems in engine mgt ( being from the flathead ford era). The work Carl Middlehauve was doing with the 600 engines was inspirational (both supercharging & most recently turbo in the Benzamino). I had purchased #4155 (Euro) with only 28,000 miles on it , and never ruan the beast. The 600 manifolding is much more amenable to EFI conversion that the 6.9, so I got a spare engine, #4154, from a wrecked US 6.9, in El Paso. This was to see if and electronic injector could be adapted to the original mechanical injector hole in the head. A machinist friend groung me 3 reamers and a jig to hold them true. The original holes in the heads were step-reamed using a 1/2 inch drill, while the heads were still on the engine (duct tape sealed the intake ports). This worked amazingly well and fuel rails were subsequentially fitted, with hi-capacity fuel pump,-10AN supply, and -8AN return lines. Fuel tank was modified to fit lines. Due to space limitations under the hood, a throttle body (90mm) was mounted just ahead of the blower (Procharger D-1SC). At the time, Motec was the only management system that had a set up for drive-by-wire (their M800). They have US facilities in Cal, Arizona, and Mooresville North Carolina (Nascar country), home based in Australia. I had looked at the F.A.S.T system which Carl uses but they did not provide drive-by-wire at the time. A pulley for the crank, with a 6-magnet reference pickup was machined, and the distributor was converted to a single sensor magnet pickup. Dual exhaust via 2.5" Stainless. The intercooler was fabricated at Bell in Texas, and the cross flow radiator by Griffin in South Carolina. I do not intend to drag race the experiment. I have not modified the tranny, rear , rocker arms or valve springs, pistons rods, or crank. This is a tough engine, and mild boost (6-10#) should give a reasonable 75 extra HP, and maybe 100# extra torque, without stressing too much. The jury is still out on the knock sensors-- the guys at Motec seem to think they can tune around them. We should know in about 6 weeks..."
