Mitsubishi unexpectedly joined forces with AMG, which was an independent company at the time, to create a sportier version of the sixth-generation Galant. Released in 1989, and positioned below the rally-bred VR-4, the sedan gained upgrades like a specific engine fitted with redesigned camshafts and pistons, a sportier-looking body kit, and a more upscale interior. AMG never tuned another Mitsubishi.
556 units of the Galant AMG Type 1 were built, according to the seller, including 289 fitted with a 5-speed manual. 839 units of the Type 2 were produced. Galant production ended in 1994.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter "4G63" 4-cylinder engine, rated at 168 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. Tuned by AMG, it spins the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.
